ENGAGED is an installation that explores a modern woman’s ambiguity toward marriage. Two wedding gowns, two story lines, two slogans. IN THE AIR, a knitted dress of golden thread and tulle suspended above ground; TIED-UP, a crocheted gown bound in a web of ribbon and rope; two outlooks on the trappings of an age-old tradition…

This installation is on view at the Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn, NY from July 8th- August16th, 2011.

Big Needles

For my first project, I used large 15mm needles and 3 plys of a thick linen/silk blended yarn. Knit in practically a rectangle with simple shaping at the neck, this easy capelet is no more difficult to knit than a scarf. The trick is in the seaming at the end. I will publish a pattern and better pictures soon.

As a knitwear designer, most of my past work and all of my training has been based on the language and principles of machine knitting. Hand Knitting, even though based on the same principles, is an entirely different language both in notation and in mechanization. I am slowly teaching myself hand knitting in reverse, translating from machine back to hand. Once I get the hang of it, I hope to start publishing hand knitting patterns…
